Book Project Rubric
Third Quarter Book Project- Bridge Differentiation- Due Thursday, Jan. 29, 2015ü Have your novel approved before reading it
ü No Dystopian or Fantasy Fiction this time
ü No Series novels this time
ü No graphic novels
ü The following genres will be acceptable depending on their grade levels:
Ø Historical Fiction
Ø Realistic Fiction
Ø Mystery/Thriller
Ø Science Fiction
Ø Contemporary
Ø Adventure
Ø Classics
Part 1: Book Notes: Hand-Written Response to Literature - DO NOT TYPE THESE.
· Brief but Concise notes on each chapter (2-3 sentences is please!)
May include the following:
· Exposition
· Character description
· Your feelings about each chapter ,event, or character
· Rising action when it occurs
· Climax; falling action; resolution as it occurs
Part 2: Typed Annotation on THEME
· One typed page, double space, 12 pt font
· Clearly state the theme
· Cite examples from the novel w/ page numbers
· Analyze the Theme. Do not summarize the story
· How do the feelings of the protagonist emphasize the theme? Repetition of thoughts or conversations may emphasize theme.
· What events or actions express the theme?
Part 3: Visual or Audio/Visual based on theme
· Creativity Counts!
· Thoroughness
· Knowledge of subject matter
IDEAS - BUT DON’T LIMIT YOURSELF TO THESE! THE SKY IS THE LIMIT! Get Creative!
· A film and/or play (re-enact a portion of the book such as the crisis/climax)
· Compose an original piece of music and explain what it represents (theme; subject matter; characterization, etc)
· Scrapbook or photo album (each page in the scrapbook should represent an element of literature from the novel: plot, characterization, setting, theme, conflict, irony, allusion, foreshadowing, symbolism, etc.)
· Painting or sculpture (must represent an element of literature and be explained)
· Original impressionist or expressionist dance (must represent an element of literature and be explained)
· Original Poem or Song (minimum of 40 lines- retelling)
· Puppet Play
· Model/ three-dimensional object representing important aspect of the novel-explained.
· Game (produce an original game which represents important or literary elements.)
· Prezi or Glogster (online Presentation tools)
HERE ARE SOME COMMON THEMES FOUND IN LITERATURE
So, what is theme anyway? Theme is the underlying message or meaning in a story. It can be the author’s view about life and how people behave, The Human Condition. It can be a Universal Truth. Sometimes it teaches a lesson such as Crime doesn’t pay. Remember, Theme is NOT what the story is about. For example, the story might be about WAR, but the Theme could be Overcoming Fear and Demonstrating Courage or Good vs Evil. So dig deeper
